This organization originally started as a simple Myspace for a group titled How to Save a Life based on the ideals behind The Fray's song: "And I would have stayed up with you all night had I known how to save a life." We believed that a community rooted in genuine love and a desire to share our lives with each other was all it took to save a life.
Three years later (summer of 2008), we began the long road to becoming a non-profit organization titled Open Our Eyes. Our goal is to educate our community on the following: the severity of suicide among teens especially, the warning signs which indicate a person is at risk, and the resources available to reduce that risk. We do not aim to take the place of talking with a medical professional. We simply hope to serve as a bridge to connect people with the help they need.
We believe that pain is inevitable and the lesson is in the struggle not the victory. But it's something that you don't have to undertake alone. Humans were not designed to be alone. We're meant to be engaging - talking, laughing, eating, playing, working, worshipping...just generally being together. Being in community can help save lives.
With over a billion people in this world, why should the concept of loneliness even exist? There's no need for anyone to ever feel alone or lonely. There's no reason anyone should not know community.
As cliché as it sounds, our dream is to shower the world with love. We know in our hearts that’s all it takes to save lives. People just need to feel they aren't alone, that they matter, that someone is paying attention. With the launch of Open Our Eyes, we are starting an entire movement of people who are doing the same.
